Inštitúcia: Univerzita Komenského v Bratislave, Fakulta matematiky, fyziky a informatiky

Title
: Earthquakes – terrifying yet fascinating

Institution: Comenius University in Bratislava, Faculty of Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science

Topic: Natural sciences

Information: Are you curious about why and how earthquakes occur, why we experience earthquakes here and what seismologists in Slovakia do? Using a small vibration table, you’ll see for yourself why the same earthquake doesn’t affect all buildings in the same way. In another experiment, you’ll see how seemingly solid ground can behave like a liquid during tremors and why this is dangerous and you’ll also examine traces of past earthquakes in Slovakia. You’ll learn how seismologists use tiny tremors to determine the time, location and magnitude of an earthquake and you’ll even have the chance to try your hand at pinpointing an earthquake’s location using seismograms. You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of what’s happening deep beneath our feet and why earthquake research is important here as well.
